Astor Branch Library Garden Solarization
Lake County, FL — The Astor Branch Library is proud to announce the launch of its Florida Native Demonstration Garden, a long-term environmental initiative designed to transform the library grounds into a vibrant space that supports local wildlife and native plant life.
On Saturday, June 28, 2025, the library partnered with Keep Lake Beautiful and dedicated community volunteers to begin the first phase of the project, which included removing invasive plant species and preparing the soil for sustainable growth.
To support healthy gardening practices and minimize chemical use, the project is using solarization, a natural technique that harnesses the sun’s heat to eliminate weeds, pests, and soilborne diseases. This process is a key step in ensuring the garden thrives with minimal environmental disruption.
The Florida Native Demonstration Garden will be an evolving educational resource, showcasing the beauty and benefits of native plants while promoting conservation and biodiversity. The project is expected to be completed by November 2026, with ongoing opportunities for public involvement throughout the process.
