What are RSS feeds?

Feeds allow you to easily see when web sites have added or updated their content. You can view the articles and releases from one location without having to ever visit the website the feed is from. Most popular news sites, including Yahoo, CNN, MSN and CNET, deliver their news headlines in RSS format.

RSS, which stands for Really Simple Syndication, also allows web sites to easily share information with each other. For example, the Lake County Government News Releases feed is "syndicated" on the Lake Sentinel website.

How can I use the feeds?

Typically, you'll need a piece of software commonly called a news reader. A news reader will check each of the feeds you subscribe to and show any new articles or content that has been added to the feed. News readers come in a variety of formats, from those included with web browsers to separate, downloadable applications.

A browser-based news reader allows you to view your feed subscription from any computer. Using a downloadable application will keep your subscription information on your local computer, similar to downloading email with Outlook.

Once you have a news reader installed, all you have to do is decide which of the Lake Government feeds you want to receive. Content available for subscription is denoted by an orange button and commonly includes the phrase "Subscribe", or text describing the feed.

If you click on the RSS button you can then subscribe to the feed, either by dragging the URL into your news reader application, or by cutting and pasting the URL into your news reader. The majority of sites will use the orange button, or text that says "RSS", but an RSS feed could appear like a normal web site link.

Certain browsers, including Firefox, Opera, Safari and Internet Explorer 7, will automatically look for feeds when you visit a web site. These browsers will typically display an orange icon near the URL of the page to make subscribing to the feed easy.

Where can I get a news reader?

There are many RSS Readers available, built for different operating systems and varied uses. Popular ones include Pluck, Feed Demon and Newz Crawler. The Firefox, Opera, Safari and Internet Explorer 7 web browsers also have RSS readers built-in. You can also use a web-based RSS reader such as Bloglines, Feedzilla, Windows Live, Pageflakes and many others.
