Cooper Memorial Library will be presenting Road to Victory: World War II Veterans, a special event to commemorate November as National Veterans’ History Awareness Month. This program will be held on Thursday, Nov. 15th, 2012, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in room 108. World War II veterans and all war veterans and their families are cordially invited, and everyone is strongly encouraged to attend this important event.
The guest speaker will be Colonel Richard Baysinger, with Brian Rogers, Lake-Sumter Community College instructor and historian, as moderator for the event. Colonel Baysinger enlisted in the Florida Army National Guard in 1970. He graduated from the Florida National Guard Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as an infantry second lieutenant. During his career of over 32 years he served in many leadership positions at company, battalion and brigade level. His command assignments included 3 infantry companies and the 3rd Battalion 124th Infantry in Panama City. He was selected as the Army Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officer for the state of Florida and transferred to Army Reserve. He returned to the Florida National Guard where he retired as the Deputy Chief of Staff – Personnel in September 2003.
The program will start with an informal social with light refreshments from 4:30 to 5 p.m., where everyone can meet and greet local veterans and speakers. A brief World War II DVD documentary will follow. Guest speaker, veteran Richard Baysinger, will discuss his father's experiences in WWII followed by a brief question & answer session.
