Lake County Library System seeks volunteers to assist with mentoring, tutoring and programs

TAVARES — Carl Collar, a six-year veteran volunteer at the Leesburg Public Library, has already logged more than 300 volunteer hours this year. While devoting a majority of his time to those enrolled in the adult literacy program and tutoring pre-GED and English as a second language students, Collar also mentors people who are working toward obtaining their U.S. citizenship.

“Volunteering means something deeper for Carl,” said Jessica Anderson, Literacy Coordinator for the Lake County Library System. “He wants to continue making a difference in peoples’ lives. As a retired teacher, he continues his quest to educate.”

The Lake County Library System is seeking more volunteers like Carl, and is currently accepting applications from people who have the time and ability to support various functions of library operations at any of 15 locations.

For example, library aides help with the daily operations of the library, such as shelving books and organizing materials, while tutors help learners gain ability and confidence through adult literacy, English as a second language, and citizenship classes. Program assistants help with hundreds of different programs, classes, and clubs offered every week, ranging from chess to technology training to quilting.

“Volunteers are essential to the success of the library system, and can apply their talents in a variety of areas,” Anderson added. “Whether you’re a subject matter expert and would like to share your knowledge or you’re interested in starting a club to meet with like-minded people, you can volunteer at your local library.”

Volunteers do not have to be Lake County residents, and they may volunteer in more than one category and at more than one library location. Volunteer information forms are available at local libraries, or by contacting Jessica Anderson at 352-253-6183, or by email at programs@mylakelibrary.org.

The Lake County Library System is dedicated to promoting lifelong learning through a cooperative countywide library system, engaging the community by offering physical and digital content, and offering services critical to education, research and workforce training.
