Shirley became a tutor in April 2009 and during her orientation at the Fruitland Park Library she expressed an interest in becoming involved with the upcoming Citizenship Class. We were thrilled! What we didn’t know at that moment was that she would soon be planning to become a citizen! Here’s her story:
I came to the U.S. in 1999 and since I was born in Canada, I really saw no urgency to get my citizenship. Canada was just across the way and the two countries are allies. In 2009, I wanted to get re-involved in literacy and came across a tutoring program offered by the Lake County Library System. I jumped at the chance to tutor again, but this time with adult learners. My first assignment was to co-teach the citizenship class with Myla Thompson and that's when the idea started to come about. While teaching, I could also learn the content for my own citizenship test. The class took about 8 weeks and ended early December 2009.
To be honest, since I went to college in the U.S. and lived here for over 10 years, the recent events were easy to me. The hard part was learning the dates of the different wars. Once I got fingerprinted and the U.S.C.I.S. gave me an audio CD with the 100 questions and answers, I listened to the CD every day in my car for about two weeks, no matter where I was going. I only had to know 10 answers, but which 10, I had no idea! The day of the test, I listened to it one last time and then turned it off. If I didn't know the answers by then, I wouldn't know them at all. I waited and waited and waited until the officer came to get me. He asked me six questions, including what happened on April 15 and I was done!
Shirley continues to volunteer as a tutor and is a great motivator! Congratulations Shirley!
